Unicorn cake

Since this was one of the most popular creations of mine on Instagram and you asked me to tell the story behind it… I have no choice :))) I’ve created a little guide for you if you ever planned to make a Unicorn cake, you can start the project with this post.

The key of success for me… is the Wilton Color Right System. I’m simply satisfied with this product and so happy that I’ve bought this instead of anything else. I’ve found it randomly on the internet, and when I’ve decided to order edible food coloring for the first time, this seemed the best option and now I can 100% approve this, because I used it a couple of times: for coloring icing and I’m painting on edible surfaces with the gel itself too, it works like a normal paint for an artist.

The main benefits to use this system are the following on my opinion:

• You get a fantastic guide with the system and online a color chart, which tells you exactly how many drops of gel you need from each color to get the desired result. So if you’re not Picasso who knows exactly how to mix different colors to get a specific one or you don’t wanna buy 100 different colors and shades of gel food coloring because of the same reason… this is the right choice!
• It will give a smooth result, all parts of the gel will be mixed evenly in the buttercream.
• It won’t add any weird taste to your icing.

I really wanna see your creations so if you got some inspiration after this post, even if you just try these piping tricks on muffins or so, show me the result!

INGREDIENTS

For 3 sponge layers (15 cm)

• 6 eggs
• 9 tbsp sugar
• 11 tbsp flour
• 3 tbsp water
• 2 tsp baking powder

Buttercream icing – stiff consistency

• 500 g butter, softened – if you don’t bother if it’s a bit yellowish
  OR: 250 g butter plus 250 g vegetable shortening for more light result
  
• 1000 g sifted icing sugar
• 3 tsp vanilla extract
• Wilton Color Right System for coloring

Other

• Marzipan or fondant
• Edible gold spray or edible gold food coloring 
• White chocolate stars
• Grill stick

INSTRUCTIONS

Sponge in general

1. Separate the eggs.
2. Whip the yolks with the sugar by a hand mixer till you get pastel yellow color.
3. Add the water an mix again.
4. Whip the egg whites till you get firm foam texture.
5. Sift and incorporate the flour and baking powder into the egg yolk mixture.
6. Fold in the egg white foam.
7. Add the food coloring.*
8. Bake it in pre-heated oven, on 180 °C till it passes the ‘toothpick test’.

*Colorful sponge layers

I created three equal portions from the batter, then added food coloring to each portion. I’ve used the following colors from Wilton Color Right System:

• Teal  from ‘Bright & Bold’ palette
• Pink from ‘Neon’ palette
• Purple from ‘Spring’ palette

Vibrant icing colors

I’ve followed the attached chart in Wilton Color Right System to get the following vibrant colors on the cake:

• Teal  from ‘Bright & Bold’ palette
• Pink from ‘Neon’ palette
• Purple from ‘Spring’ palette
• Green from ‘Pastel’ palette
• Deep blue from ‘Winter’ palette

The list of open star Wilton piping tips I’ve used:

• # 1M for the big rainbow swirls (Teal, Pink, Purple, Deep blue)
• # 32 Green
• # 18 Teal, Pink
• # 16 Purple

Assembly

1. I’ve filled the sponge layers with red cherry filling and buttercream this time, but it’s absolutely optional, so use the filling you prefer.
2. When the layers were on each other I’ve covered the cake with buttercream and put into the fridge for a few hours till the buttercream set.
3. In the meantime:
   • I’ve formed the horn: roll the marzipan around the grill stick and spray it with the edible gold spray.
   • Created the ears: cut 2 bigger and 2 smaller water drop shapes from the rolled marzipan and sprayed the smaller ones with the edible gold spray and formed the ears around toothpicks.
   • I’ve formed tiny marzipan pieces for the eyes and sprayed them too with the edible gold spray.
   • I’ve colored the different amounts of buttercream portions, filled them into piping bags.
     I think the only special one is the rainbow swirl, so I explain the method I’ve created: I’ve opened the piping bag and by a small angled spatula I’ve added small amounts from different colors of buttercream, like flower petals next to each other on the side of the bag (teal, pink, purple, deep blue). This way you can get all colors at the same time while you are piping the icing to the cake. You can play with the amounts and the positions too.
4. When the cake was ready to decorate, I’ve placed the horn, ears and eyes to the right place.
5. I’ve started to use the piping bags. First of all I’ve applied the big rainbow swirls, then filled the smaller gaps by the smaller buttercream shapes.
6. Finally I’ve added the white chocolate stars.

For me this is the best therapy against stress, because I can get lost in these beautiful details and the only thing in focus: is my cake! 🙂

Unikornis torta

Mivel ez volt az egyik legnépszerűbb alkotásom az Instagramon, és többen kértétek, hogy meséljek róla… nincs más választásom! :))) Összeállítottam egy kis segédletet, ha valaha is meg szeretnéd sütni a saját Unikornis tortádat, ez alapján már elindulhatsz.

A sikerem titka… a Wilton Color Right System. Egyszerűen elégedett vagyok a termékkel és rendkívül boldog, hogy ezt vettem meg bármi más helyett. Teljesen váletlen szerűen bukkantam rá a neten és amikor először rendeltem ételfestéket ez tűnt a legjobb választásnak és mostmár 100%-ig meg is tudom ezt erősíteni, hiszen jópárszor használtam már: vajkrémekhez, de magával a géllel festek ehető felületekre is, éppen úgy működik mint a normál festék egy festő kezében.

A legfőbb előnyei a rendszer használatának véleményem szerint az alábbiak:

• Egy remek színkeverési útmutató jár a szetthez, ami online is elérhető, pontosan megmondja, hány csepp szükséges az egyes színekből a hőn áhított színárnyalathoz. Tehát, ha te sem vagy Picasso, aki tudja, hogy kell kikeverni speciális árnyalatokat vajkrémhez vagy nem akarsz 100 különböző színű és árnyalatú ételfestéket megvásárolni ugyanezen okból kifolyólag… akkor ez lesz a befutó!
• Egységes végeredményt ad, a gél teljes egészében, egyenletesen belekeveredik a vajkrémbe.
• Nem ad fura ízt a vajkrémnek.

Igazán szeretném látni az alkotásokat, tehát, ha némi ihletet merítettél a posztból, még akkor is, ha csak muffinokon gyakorlod a vajkrémmel való díszítést, mindenképp mutasd meg az eredményt!

HOZZÁVALÓK

Három piskótaréteghez (15 cm)

• 6 tojás
• 9 kanál cukor
• 11 kanál liszt
• 3 kanál víz
• 2 kiskanál sütőpor

Vajkrém – kemény állagú

• 500 g vaj vagy margarin, puhítva -ha nem bánod, hogy kicsit sárgás árnyalatú
  VAGY: 250 g vaj plusz 250 g szilárd növényi zsiradék a világosabb eredményért
• 1000 g átszitált porcukor
• 3 kiskanál vanília kivonat
• Wilton Color Right System a színezéshez

Egyéb

• Marcipán vagy fondant
• Ehető arany spray vagy ételfesték
• Fehér csokicsillagok
• Grillpálcika

ELKÉSZÍTÉS

Piskóta általánosságban

1. Válaszd szét a tojásokat.
2. Kézi mixerrel keverd ki a tojásssárgákat a cukorral, amíg pasztellsárga nem lesz a keverék.
3. Add hozzá a vizet és keverd el újra.
4. Verd a tojásfehérjéket kemény habbá.
5. Szitáld a lisztet és a sütőport a tojásságás keverékhez és keverd el benne.
6. Forgasd hozzá a fehérjehabot is.
7. Add hozzá az ételfestéket.*
8. Süsd előmelegített sütőben, 180 °C-on tűpróbáig.

*Színes piskótarétegek

A piskótatésztát három egyenlő részre osztottam, majd mindgyik adaghoz hozzákevertem az ételfestéket. Az alábbi színeket használtam a Wilton Color Right System-ből:

• Teal  a ‘Bright & Bold’ palettáról
• Pink a ‘Neon’ palettáról
• Purple a ‘Spring’ palettáról

Vibráló színű vajkrém

A Wilton Colour Right System-hez csatolt útmutatót követtem a vajkrém színezésekor, hogy az alábbi vibráló színeket kapjam:

• Teal  a ‘Bright & Bold’ palettáról
• Pink a ‘Neon’ palettáról
• Purple a ‘Spring’ palettáról
• Green a ‘Pastel’ palettáról
• Deep blue a ‘Winter’ palettáról

Az álrtalam használt Wilton ‘open star’ habnyomófejek listája (kép az angol szöveg azonos részénél):

• # 1M a szivárványos spirálokhoz (Teal, Pink, Purple, Deep blue)
• # 32 Green
• # 18 Teal, Pink
• # 16 Purple

Összeállítás

1. Megtöltöttem a piskóta rétegeket piros cseresznye és vajkrém töltelékkel.
2. Amikor a rétegek egymáson voltak, beborítottam a tortát a vajkrémmel és betettema hűrőbe néhány órára, hogy megdermedjen.
3. Idő közben:
   • Megformáztam a szarvat: a marcipánt a grillpálcika köré tekertem és lefújtam az aranyszínű spray-el.
   • Megformáztam a füleket: két nagyobb és két kisebb csepp formát vágtam ki a kinyújtott marcipánból és lefújtam az arany spay-vel és egy-egy fogpiszkáló köré alakítottam őket.
   • Kis marzipan darabokból kialakítottam a szemeket és ezeket is lefújtam arany színűre.
   • A különböző mennyiségű vajkrém adagokat megszíneztem az ételfestékkel.
     Szerintem az egyetlen ami részletesebb magyarázatra szorul az a szivárványos spirál, tehát kifejtem a folyamatot: kinyitottam a habnyomó zsákot és kisméretű spatula segítségével, virágszirom szerűen mindenféle színből kentem a zsák oldalára egy-egy kis adagot. Ilyen módon egyszerre lesznek jelen a különféle színek a vajkrémben miközben díszeted a tortát. Játszadozhatsz a mennyiségekkel és az elhelyezéssel.
4. Amikor a torta készen állt a díszítésre, a megfelelő helyre tettem a szarvat, füleket és a szemeket.
5. Elkezdtem használni a habnyomó zsákokat. Először a nagy szivárványos spirálokat vittem fel a felületre, majd a hézagokat a kisebb vajkrém formákkal töltöttem ki.
6. Végezetül feltettem a fehércsoki csillagokat.

Számomra egy ilyen alkotás a lehető legjobb terápia stressz ellen, hiszen teljesen bele tudok merülni ezekbe a gyönyörűséges részletekbe, kizárólag egy dologra van a figyelmem középpontjában: és ez a tortám! 🙂
